Kings sign Dexter Kernich-Drew as injury replacement player

The Brydens Lawyers Sydney Kings have today announced the signing of Dexter Kernich-Drew as an injury replacement player for Angus Glover.

Kernich-Drew joins the Kings after spending last season as an injury replacement player with Melbourne United, and having most recently spent the last few months as a training player with South East Melbourne Phoenix.

The 199cm guard also spent time with the Cairns Taipans and Perth Wildcats, where he was part of the 2017 Championship winning side alongside Kings Head Coach Adam Forde.

Forde is looking forward to re-uniting with Dexter as the team battles through some recent injuries and looks to bounce back against Adelaide this weekend.

“I think Dexter ticks a lot of boxes for us” Forde said.

“His familiarity with the league, and my past experience with him – I know that he’s going to fit really well with the group and our culture.”

“Having done a pre-season with South East Melbourne and already started his NBL1 training we knew he was going to come in ready to play, and be able to contribute on the court immediately” said Forde.

“He’s another shooter, and he’s got a bit of edge about him too. He’s great in the open court in transition, he can compete on the defensive end, and he’s going to be a solid fit backing up DJ in that guard spot.”

With the NBL announcing this week that the Kings would be returning to Sydney for two home games in Round 5, Forde says the opportunity to play at Qudos Bank Arena is one they entire group are excited about.

“It’s been great being on the road and being able to play, but naturally any opportunity to go home and back to familiar surroundings, and just being able to play on our home court again – everyone is really ecstatic about that” Forde said.

“Our original plan was that we thought we would be 3-months on the road, so to be able to come home for even just 10 days in the middle of that is going to give us the little freshen-up that we need right now.”

“Plus, we know how good that Sydney crowd is, and we’re pumped to finally have some support from the sidelines” Forde added.

Kernich-Drew comes in to replace Kings star Angus Glover who has been sidelined with a knee injury.

He has already travelled from Melbourne to Adelaide and will suit up for the Kings Round 4 game against the 36ers on Saturday night.
