Torrey Craig’s full-circle journey is not finished

Torrey Craig began his professional career in Australia, reached the NBA and returned to become an NBL champion. The achievement matters. So does what comes next.

Torrey Craig has built a career around doing what a team needs and winning wherever the journey takes him.

“Coming back felt like a full-circle moment,” Craig said. “I started my professional career here and made it to the NBA from here. It felt right to come back towards the end of my career and compete in this league again.”

The choice of Sydney combined basketball ambition with a city Craig had always wanted to experience. Winning the NBL26 title made the return complete, placing the achievement alongside championships from every other level of his career.

“If I’m playing in the NBL, my goal is to win an NBL championship,” he said. “Those moments mean a lot to me.”

During deciding game of the Championship last year, Craig sensed the energy shifting when Sydney forced overtime. Adelaide appeared tired; the Kings had momentum. Around them, a record crowd supplied the energy elite competitors want to feel.

“You could feel it, hear it and see it,” he said. “As an athlete, that’s what you want to play in front of.”

The title also changes how opponents see Sydney. The Kings now possess the experience of a group that understands the sacrifices, details and pressure required to finish a championship run. Every opponent will want to measure itself against them.

And Craig welcomes that target. In his view, playing for Sydney already creates that response, but now the championship only intensifies it.

His role will remain familiar: adjust to whatever the team requires. The new players bring energy and the uncertainty of opponents having no established NBL scouting history on them. Craig expects that freshness to produce breakout opportunities.

Banner Night will be significant, but he has already drawn the boundary between celebration and competition.

“Once the banner goes up, it’s time for business,” Craig said. “Last year is last year. We accomplished something. Now we’re trying to do it again.”
