Mitchell returns to junior club Comets for NBL1 season

Sydney Kings guard Iggy Mitchell will be back in the green and gold of the Sydney Comets next year, after recently penning a deal with the NBL1 club.

After one season with North Sydney, the Kings development player decided to return to his junior club once they were added to the 2023 competition.

"To be able to go back and play for Comets is something I’m really excited for," said Mitchell, who averaged 12.32 points, 8.05 rebounds and 2.42 assists with the Bears in 2022.

"They’re my hometown club and being able to play for coach Lachie Lonergan again as well was a big reason in me deciding to go back to my home.

"Being the first ever NBL1 season for Comets is definitely exciting not only for me but the club because it is essentially where I was introduced to basketball and where I developed under great coaches like Jacob Jackomas and Paul Mellett, who I feel are responsible in shaping the player I am today, so being able to go back to the place where it all started is special."

Mitchell admits he'll be ready to deal with the challenges in year two of the NBL1 season after his debut campaign with Norths and second year with the Hoops Capital NBL club.

"I think having a lot of freedom and control playing for Norths helped me to develop in a lot of aspects of my game as well as gaining more experience playing at a high level of senior basketball, which has really boosted my confidence on the court," he said.

"That and training and competing each and every day with the boys at the Kings has helped me continue to grow as a player."

Once he's done the NBL23 season with Chase Buford's side, he is confident the Comets can make some serious noise on the court.

"[The goal is to] Hopefully win it, which might be a little rough considering it’s our first season," he said.

"But winning is something that in my time at Comets as a junior was always a goal we achieved, so being able to replicate that at the senior level is definitely something we’ll be looking to do."

Mitchell becomes the second Hoops Capital individual at the Comets next season, joining Flames coach Shelley Gorman - who will coach the women's NBL1 side.
