Former number one overall draft pick and NBA Champion Andrew Bogut has today announced that he has retired from professional basketball.
After an illustrious fifteen-year career, which included fourteen seasons in the NBA and two seasons in the NBL with the Sydney Kings, Bogut revealed his plans for retirement on his new podcast, Rogue Bogues.
Following two seasons with the Utah Utes and being names the Naismith College Player of the Year and winning the John R. Wooden Award, Bogut was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks with the first overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft. Throughout his 706 game NBA career, Bogut played for the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Los Angeles Lakers, highlighted in 2015 winning an NBA Championship with the Golden State Warriors.
In 2018, Bogut signed a two-year deal with the Sydney Kings, leading the Club to a Finals appearance in 2019, a Minor Premiership in 2020 and their first Grand Final appearance since 2008. The biggest name to ever play in the NBL, Bogut helped transform the Sydney Kings and highlight the NBL on a global scale.
Chairman and Owner Paul Smith congratulated Andrew on his career and thanked him for the contributions he has made to the Club.
“Andrew’s basketball achievements speak for themselves. I am personally grateful to Andrew for his contribution to the Sydney Kings, basketball in Sydney and Australia. The true legacy and pathways that Andrew has laid and what he has contributed to this point will only be appreciated over time, as he brings his experience, persona and business acumen to our sport” Smith said.
“Andrew is a person that cares deeply about the people around him – his wife and children are his top priority. The fact that he is healthy and able to enjoy his retirement is what we should celebrate today. The future is bright for Andrew, the sport of basketball and the Sydney Kings. Thank you, Bogues.”
Co-owner Paul Kind echoed Paul’s sentiments.
“We had the good fortune of investing in Kings at the same time Andrew signed. His impact from day one has been immense across the business, we benefited from his experience and commitment to excellence. I want to congratulate Andrew, wish him the best and I look forward to his continued involvement at the Kings.”
Bogut’s influence on the success of the Australian Boomers cannot be understated, representing the country at three Olympic Games (2004, 2008 and 2016) in addition to numerous World Cups and FIBA Championships.
Bogut finishes his career as arguably one of the greatest Australian basketballers of all time. His professional accolades include an NBA Championship (2015), NBL Most Valuable Player (2019), NBL Defensive Player of the Year (2019), All-NBA Third Team (2010), NBA All-Defensive Second Team (2015), NBA All-Rookie First Team (2006), All-NBL First Team (2019), and All-NBL Second Team (2020).
From all Kings players, staff, members, corporates and fans, and basketball fans across the world, thank you Andrew for your contributions to the game we love. You will be sorely missed.
