Kings import RJ Hunter will be out for the remainder of the NBL22 season after rupturing his left patellar tendon.

RJ sustained the injury early in the first quarter of his return match against the Illawarra Hawks in Wollongong on Thursday night.

The injury was to the opposite knee to the knee soreness which had kept RJ out of all but two of the Brydens Lawyers Sydney Kings games so far this season.

RJ will have further assessments with specialists next week to ascertain surgical options and treatment required, but it is comfirmed this is a season-ending injury.

The club will continue to support RJ through that process.

“We are all heartbroken for RJ,” Brydens Lawyers Sydney Kings CEO Chris Pongrass said.

“RJ has proven to be a great team-mate and wonderful personality within our group so we were all naturally devastated to see him go down in such a fashion on Thursday night.”

The former Boston Celtics draft pick and Georgia State alumni sent a special thank you to the Kings organisation and team-mates.

“I just really want to thank everyone from staff to my team-mates, everyone who has made an impact on me,” he said.

“It hurts the most to not continue being around those people every day.”

Pongrass confirmed the Kings had begun the process of searching for a replacement import.

The Kings are back in action with a critical clash against the New Zealand Breakers tomorrow (Sunday, January 16) at Qudos Bank Arena. Get your tickets here.

Angus Glover will return for the clash having exited COVID health protocols during the week.
