The champions have retained an elite core, added size and brought emerging Australian talent home. Here is how the NBL27 Kings are taking shape.
The championship engine room
Kendric Davis returns after a historic Championship Series in which his scoring and playmaking powered Sydney to banner number six. Around him, Matthew Dellavedova brings control and leadership, Torrey Craig supplies two-way versatility and Xavier Cooks remains one of the league’s most dynamic forwards.
Makuach Maluach enters another season with the athleticism to change games at both ends, while Tyler Robertson returns as another ball-handler and perimeter threat. Jason Spurgin provides continuity and frontcourt depth.
The new frontcourt
Andrew Carr describes himself as an unselfish, versatile big who can stretch the floor, connect actions on the perimeter and defend away from the basket. “I’m here to put the team first and do whatever it takes to win,” he said.
Carr arrives after time with the Rip City Remix in the NBA G League. Mobile, skilled and capable of stretching the floor, he gives Goorjian another way to shape the Kings’ attack.
At 7’1”, Harry Wessels brings genuine size after four years at Saint Mary’s and a 2026 NBA Summer League appearance with the San Antonio Spurs. His rim protection and finishing will be central to Sydney’s new-look interior.
Wessels said his four years at Saint Mary’s built his defence, rebounding habits and discipline, while Summer League with San Antonio showed him the physical jumps still required at the next level.
New options in the backcourt
Jayden Stone joins after college basketball at Missouri, bringing size and versatility at guard. Sydney-born Will Johnston returns home after seven years in the United States and a New York Knicks Summer League opportunity, fresh from averaging 28 points and 5.3 assists for the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Spiders.
Stone said Goorjian’s message has been simple: take the right shots with confidence. Johnston, meanwhile, embraces learning behind Davis and Dellavedova. “I see opportunity rather than a lack of opportunity,” Johnston said. “I can grow, learn, compete and impact winning with those guys.”
What has changed
The departures of Shaun Bruce, Jaylin Galloway, Hunter Goodrick, Bul Kuol, Kouat Noi and Tim Soares mean the Kings will not simply roll out last season’s rotation. The core identity remains, but the combinations, size and roles around it will evolve.
The first test
The new group will be unveiled at Afterpay Arena on Sunday 20 September when the Kings host Cairns and raise their sixth championship banner.
