The Sydney Kings will look to carry the toughness and togetherness forged on the road into Sunday’s double header, with Head Coach Brian Goorjian declaring his side has taken a significant step forward.
After a demanding stretch including Wollongong, Melbourne, Perth and Launceston, the Kings return home with renewed energy and belief in their ability to respond under pressure.
“I thought it was a great sign that we just kept going to the next play,” Goorjian said.
“If it was disappointing, or we made a mistake, next play.
“I think we took a huge step forward.”
The journey from Perth to Launceston included a 3.30am wake-up call and a 4.15am bus departure, before the Kings arrived after 5pm to prepare for a physical contest against rested opposition.
With fatigue setting in, Goorjian said Sydney found a way through effort and defensive commitment.
“What actually won the game was energy plays, things that you could control,” he said.
“Six straight stops at the end of the game, and then two offensive rebounds. I was really happy about the way we won, and really happy about where they went when they were fatigued.”
For Makuach Maluach, the return home is welcome but the focus remains firmly on the next challenge.
“It’s been a hectic road trip. I’m excited to be home,” Maluach said.
“We’ve got a big game coming up on Sunday.”
Maluach said his approach remained grounded in daily work and doing whatever the team needed.
“For me, it’s just about the day to day. I love basketball. I’m grateful for it,” he said.
“I just care about winning. I don’t wake up thinking, ‘How many minutes am I going to play today?’”
That team-first mentality has been important throughout a stretch where the entire team has contributed on the court.
Goorjian said the development of Sydney’s younger players would continue to play a major role in the team’s progress.
“You can’t win in this without your bench,” he said.
“The development of the youth and the improvement of the youth is going to determine a lot for us.”
“We’ve just come off this heavy, hard road trip, but there’s a lot of enthusiasm in the gym, a lot of energy in the gym.”
Sunday also brings the Kings and Sydney Flames together, with Goorjian welcoming the growing connection between the two teams.
“The Kings are all on board with the Flames, and the Flames are all on board with the Kings,” he said.
“Having us all together on a Sunday is exciting.”
