Join us in celebrating the 1990s and Sydney basketball

The '90s was many things like having a pet Tamagotchi, renting a movie at Video Ezy and Aussie rock band turning into a kid's group called The Wiggles. Yeah, that would never last...

But it was also a golden age of the NBL, the days of watching the Kings at the Sydney Entertainment Centre (affectionately known as the Kingdome), and the old blue and yellow Channel Ten logo.

This week the Kings and Flames are celebrating the '90s. Throughout the week we will be doing 90s-themed content and more in our double header on Sunday where the Kings will play the Adelaide 36ers and the Flames will play the Townsville Fire.

To start the celebrations we spoke to Brad Rosen, an iconic former Kings player in the 90s and now NBL commentator, to remind us of what Sydney basketball was like back in the decade.

“Basketball was massive in the '90s,” Rosen said.

“You had Michael Jordan and that’s when it took off around the world but especially here in Australia. The Kings were in the State Sports Centre and then moved over to the Kingdome in the 90s, and it was just the place to be.

“10,500 people every game and Dwayne McClain was an absolute superstar.”

Rosen name-dropped half a dozen Kings players from the 90s like Damian Keogh, Dean Uthoff, Bruce Bolden and Steve “Mr Magic” Carfino who was recently named Kings’ Number One. 

Rosen spoke about his experience playing in the '90s, his first-ever game was against none other than Andrew Gaze and the peak of the Melbourne Tigers.

“It was phenomenal, my first ever game was against the Melbourne Tigers,” Rosen said.

 “And I’ll never forget this, I’m sitting on the bench, nervous to go on and Bob Turner [Kings coach] says ‘righto Brad, you’re in’ and as I walked out onto the court and Gaze gives me [high]-five and wishes me luck!

“That was just a dream come true.”

Rosen reminisced on playing with the Kings in 1996 with Shane Heal, Bruce Bolden and Issac Burton.

“That’s when Shane joined the Kings, we had Bolden and Issac, then it just went to another level for us,” Rosen said.

During the week the Hoops Capital has plenty planned to celebrate the 1990s.
