Premier Dominic Perrottet today announced a purple and gold victory celebration will be held in Circular Quay for the NBL Grand Final champions the Sydney Kings on Saturday, 14 May, following their historic championship.
The celebration will give Sydneysiders a chance to come out to congratulate and show the Sydney Kings players and coaching staff how much their efforts and commitment are appreciated in their own city, after an incredible grand final victory 17 years in the making.
“Wednesday night’s Championship glory was an extraordinary, memorable and thrilling NBL grand final series win over the Tasmania JackJumpers,” Mr Perrottet said.
“To celebrate this milestone, the NSW Government is hosting a public celebration on Saturday which will be a fitting reward and a testament to the Kings resilience and hard work that they emerged victorious.
“Massive credit must also go to the Sydney Kings supporters who came out in droves to Qudos Bank Arena with a record crowd attendance of 16,149, the largest for a grand final in NBL history.”
This is the first championship win for the Sydney Kings since 2005 and the clubs fourth ever NBL Championship, adding to the three straight titles in 2003, 2004, 2005.
“It's an honour to be able to share our championship win with our fans and the people of Sydney. We thank the Premier for his support in helping us bring the NBL Trophy to Circular Quay on Saturday,” Paul Smith, Sydney Kings Co-owner and Chairman.
Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said the Victory event in Sydney will give the public and players the chance to come together to celebrate the new kings of the court, who secured the Championship with a 97-88 win.
“This win is a moment in history and once again elevating the future of basketball in Sydney,” Mr Ayres said.
“The Kings victory demonstrated the growth in the games profile and enthusiasm at the grassroots level – just look at the record crowds that attended. Basketball and team sports always foster a true sense of community spirit and what better way to bring people together and give fans the rare opportunity to meet their sporting heroes in person, get their autographs and also for the players to thank the people that have supported them and cheered them on.”
The celebration on Saturday, 14 May at the Overseas Passenger Terminal Forecourt in Sydney will commence at 11:00am with free entertainment and opportunities for fans to take photos with the Championship trophy and team mascots (Cub and Lion).
The official ceremony will commence at 12:00pm and conclude at 12:30pm, followed by a meet and greet with players and an autograph signing session.
Event information will be posted on www.nsw.gov.au/sydneykingsvictory
