Sydney Kings captain Xavier Cooks has added more silverware to his collection by being named the 2022 New Zealand National Basketball League Most Valuable Player.

The 26-year-old Wellington Saints import posted averages of 21.8 points, 11.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.4 blocks per game on 59.9 per cent shooting from the field and 45.8 per cent from three in 13 appearances.

"I'm extremely proud to win this award and it's a testament to all the hard work of everyone in this Wellington organisation, including my teammates who pushed me each and every day to get better," Cooks said.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed my time over here in New Zealand and am super excited to finish the season on a high note with the Saints during the upcoming finals, before returning to Sydney to get stuck into pre-season and defending our NBL championship."

This strong play, which helped the Saints claim an improbable final six berth after a 3-7 start to the season, also saw Cooks claim the honour of the competition's Most Outstanding Forward (Commissioners Cup).

Cooks' seven double-doubles and one triple-double helped him also earn selection in the All-Star Five along with Chris Johnson (Tuatara), Jarrod West (Giants), Anthony Hilliard (Airs) and Javonte Douglas (Airs).

The NBL22 Finals MVP and his Saints are now preparing for their elimination showdown with Tuatara at Eventfinda Stadium on Tuesday - with the winner advancing to play Taranaki on Wednesday.
