Feature film Love & Basketball may be the best love story involving the sport, but the second-best story is how Meghan, the Flames superfan met David, the rabid Kings fan.
This Sunday the Kings are celebrating Valentine's Day a day early in our game against the Brisbane Bullets at 2.45pm at Qudos Bank Arena.
This story is about how the love of the Kings and Flames brought two people together in an unexpected way.
Both Meghan and David are basketball nuts and have been involved in the sport since the ‘90s. They are also fans of the two professional basketball teams in Sydney, it was a perfect match.
Ever since being married, they have been called Mr and Mrs Flames.
Meghan explained while Kings and Flames double-headers are one of her favourite events, she is more of a Flames fan and David is more of a Kings fan but they both love the two teams. They only missed one of the six double-headers this season due to moving to regional NSW.
“David is such a fan of women basketball, but he’s also a fan of tall women which fits me to a tee,” she said.
They only recently moved to regional NSW and now drive four and a half hours to attend the Kings and Flames games for every game.
Meghan has been a fan of the Flames since she was 13-years-old and has been a member for many years.

But they first met at a Kings game, David and Meghan’s seats were very close and David waved at Meghan. But she said she didn’t even notice him.
They ran into each other a month later at a Flames game at Brydens Stadium, which happened to be David’s first ever Flames game.
“I saw David wearing a Kings jersey, which turned out to be a Lakers jersey,” she said.
“But I thought it was one of the players like Tommy [Garlepp] so I went to say hello and our eyes locked.”
Meghan is an experienced basketball coach and assumed David was a parent of a child she had coached, so when he spoke to her, she assumed he was a parent and tried to figure out which kid of his she had coached through small talk.
During the half-time break, Meghan gave up and asked, “I’m sorry but I don’t quite remember you, what’s your child’s name?”
David responded: “I don’t have any kids?”
Meghan asked how David knew who she is, and he explained they sit near each other at Kings games.
“David sat four rows in front of me at a Kings game, he waved at me four weeks before we actually met but I didn’t see that.”
For the second half of the game, David sat with Meghan to talk and watch the Flames, and the rest was history.
“He was a bit shy,” Meghan said.
“I could tell he wanted to ask for my number but wasn’t quite sure how to do it. I said to him ‘oh you are on all the Kings fan pages right? You can find me on there'.
“He promptly forgot my full name and spent the next 48 hours scrolling through the Kings fan group until he found me and asked me out two days later. We got married two years to the day we met.”
Meghan joked that it was a great night for him. He not only became a fan of the Flames that night, but he also got a wife out of it.
Meghan explained that none of her friends were surprised when they heard the story of how they met.
“Everyone thinks it’s quite funny, considering basketball has been such a big part of my life,” she said.
The Kings will celebrate Valentine's Day on Sunday 13th at 2.45pm at Qudos Bank Arena. Maybe you’ll find your partner there too, get your tickets here.
