The Sydney Kings are pleased to announce the acquisition of Todd Blanchfield who has signed for the next two seasons.
Blanchfield, 25, who has established himself as an accomplished professional over more than 200 NBL games, will bolster the Kings guard rotation. At 6’7, or 200cm, he has the size and skill set to swing to either forward position, adding versatility to the team.
Sydney Kings head coach Andrew Gaze is excited by what his new recruit brings to the squad.
“I’ve admired Todd’s game over the eight years that he’s been in the NBL. He has tremendous athleticism and has developed into an elite shooter. Most importantly everyone we’ve consulted, from former teammates to coaches, have all been glowing in respect to his character. I’m looking forward to working with Todd and the coaching staff believes that he has plenty of upside to his game – we’ll be endeavouring to extract that from him.”
Blanchfield says he can’t wait to join his new team.
“I’m very happy to be coming on board. I’ve spent a little bit of time with Andrew now and have appreciated his straight forward nature. Jason Cadee is also a great friend of mine and from what I can gather from him the Kings just seem like the perfect fit.”
The new recruit also says he can’t wait to play inside Qudos Bank Arena.
“That crowd is loud. It’s very loud in there. I’m sure it’s going to be a lot of fun to play in front of. Obviously the Kings have very passionate fans and love their basketball.”
Blanchfield, who shot a career-best 40.4% from three point range last season, is a two-way specialist, demonstrated recently when named Melbourne United’s best defensive player for the 2016-17 season.
Blanchfield offers valuable size in the back-court, and Sydney Kings Managing Director Jeff Van Groningen says he expects he will fit in very well with established stars Kevin Lisch and Jason Cadee.
“The Kings organisation is very pleased to have secured a quality person and player in Todd Blanchfield. We know that he will complement our group very well and we look forward to him assisting us with our playoff ambitions in 2017-18.
The 25 year old Blanchfield played the previous two seasons with Melbourne United, following a six year stint with the Townsville Crocodiles.
