Sweet-shooting guard joins the Kings

The Sydney Kings today announced that Australian guard Adam Thoseby has signed with the club for the 2017/2018 National Basketball League season.

Thoseby had been trialling with the Sydney Kings Invitational Team, which competed in the recent Atlas Challenge tournament held in Suzhou, China, leading the Kings to victory with a brilliant 28 points in the tournament final.

An aggressive swingman with a deadly perimeter shot, the 26 year old Thoseby committed to continue with the Sydney Kings Invitational Team for the three-game series against visiting United States NCAA teams during the month of August. Thoseby tallied  13 points in the team’s loss to the powerful University of Oklahoma last Thursday night in Penrith.

His commitment to the Invitational team ultimately paid off, securing his first elite-level professional contract.

Thoseby’s basketball journey is an interesting one. Holding a joint British-Australian passport, he played for Great Britain in the 2011 Under-20 European championships, averaging 8.9 points per game and shooting 57.6 percent from the field during the tournament. In all, he has represented either England or Great Britain on 40 occasions.

Born in Melbourne, he played high school basketball in Maine in the United States before enrolling in college at Utah State, playing one season there before stops at South Dakota and Georgia Southwestern State. He averaged 15.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in his senior year, and he currently plays for the Knox Raiders in Australia’s SEABL competition.

It was during Thoseby’s time in Knox that one of the NBL’s all-time great perimeter players, current Kings Assistant Coach Lanard Copeland observed Thoseby’s game at close quarters and received feedback on his game from fellow NBL legend Daryl McDonald, who coaches Knox.

Copeland’s recommendation saw the Kings hierarchy invite Thoseby to China and, ultimately, to join the NBL team. “Adam Thoseby is one of the more explosive guys you’ll see this year. He’s a guy who can shoot from anywhere and I look for him to surprise a few people. He’s also a committed defender who plays both ends of the floor”, Copeland remarked.

Sydney continues their preseason with a game against American University next Thursday night, at the EG Whitlam Centre in Liverpool, where Thoseby will take the court for the first time as a newly minted King.

The Kings’ National Basketball League season officially tips off on Saturday 7 October at Qudos Bank Arena with a game against the Adelaide 36ers.
